Reason no. 7,389,451 why my husband is awesome.

April 18, 2008 · 5 Comments

He found that hat on the side of the road.

After texting him yesterday afternoon that I was having a bummer of a day, I came home to a hot bath being run (complete with lavender bath salts from JillianSays–mmmm), a cold beer in a frosted mug, and a quesadilla dinner on the stove. Oh, and snuggles.

Be jealous. Be very, very jealous.

It’s the simple things.

April 11, 2008 · 4 Comments

Like homemade granola for breakfast. Triscuits, sharp cheddar and fresh pineapple for lunch. A three-day weekend. Music that sounds like everything you love about the South. Bourbon slushies and late-night giggles. A friend’s small good fortune. A gulp of cold water. The bouganvillea in my front yard. For one day, ignoring all the minutia you should be worrying about and enjoying the company of people you love who live far away.

Me \'n my sister-in-law.

Just a few simple things that have made me smile today. Happy weekend! How was your day?

Decisions, decisions.

April 7, 2008 · 3 Comments

You know what’s frustrating? When you’ve finally made a hefty decision–we’re talking a life-changer here– with all consequences deliberated carefully and all options weighed thoughtfully, and are ready to move on with the next steps of said decision…when suddenly a new option is introduced, calling into question all your careful deliberation and plotting-out. It’s torture. And you have one of those throw-it-all-out-the-window moments and want to avoid being a responsible adult entirely. (Pardon the vagueness, but this is how it’s gotta be.) That’s my day in a nutshell. Happy Monday.

In other, entirely less troubling news, I love my husband. And I love when he has weekends off, because we do so many fabulous and ridiculous things when we have days to spend together–like surprise my mom with a visit the day after her birthday, buy lots of stuff we don’t really need–but might someday!–at a salvage mart, eat all kinds of ice cream, shred T-shirts for stuffing pillows, dramatically de-clutter our carport, start trying to buy a house, bake sweet potato fries, lie around listening to the rain, and just generally be awesome and adorable. I love him and I love our life together and I wish every couple in the world could be as happy as we are.

Inherited Notions

March 20, 2008 · No Comments

Notions, originally uploaded by Avenue [Handmade].

OK, I know, I promised illustrated tales of my latest craft fair adventure…soon, my dears, soon. It’s hard to blog lots of photos when you spend 40 hours a week away from the computer that holds said photos and your work computer doesn’t read your jump drive. I know, I know, it’s a hard life I lead. No really, I promise a posting of those photos this weekend…and maybe even a website launch….

Anyway, just wanted to share this bit of eye candy in the form of some vintage sewing notions I recently inherited from my paternal grandmother. (more…)

Grogginess.

March 10, 2008 · No Comments

I blame Daylight Savings Time. Woke up all cozy and zombie-like under my great-grandma’s quilt and still have yet to feel fully awake. All I wanna do is curl up in my hoodie and my quilt and doze the day away. Sigh. Not gonna happen. At least the workday is almost half over.
In other, less groggy news, I had a lovely weekend visiting my folks, dragging them to all my favorite Jacksonville haunts: Fans & Stoves (antique shop), City Rescue Mission (thrift store), Shep’s (tacky, junky, wonderful salvage mart–think Harbor Freight Tools + Big Lots + Army Surplus + Dollar Store + an exceptionally trashy flea market), and White Way Deli. We had fun–they’re such good sports. Dad served as my shopping cart, holding my stack of things to purchase while I pawed through bin after bin of antique silverware at Fans & Stoves…Mom bought me yet another Tupperware container for storing all my crafty odds & ends. And I think they’re gonna come to Mega-Craft-Zilla with me next weekend!
Yesterday I made a lightbox (yay for photo-taking at all hours!) and took a stab at oxidizing metal. I’ll put up some After pics of the oxidized stuff soon–no Befores cause the lightbox wasn’t finished yet! Happy Monday…I’m off to get more coffee and one of the brownies Mom insisted I bring home.

Best quote about motherhood, ever.

March 7, 2008 · 2 Comments

Yesterday after work I got in my car just in time to catch the last 24 seconds of StoryCorps on NPR, which was just in time to hear a mother say these lovely words to her daughter: Knowing you is like reading a really good book–I can’t wait to turn the page and see what happens next.

Beautiful. I wish I could find the rest of the story….

Happy Friday! I’m going to visit my momma this weekend. Yippeee!

preparation

Last week I stumbled upon this super tutorial for an Advent calendar (with chocolate!) by the talented Allsorts. Since my husband and I have inhabited…shall we say–cramped living spaces for most of our two years of marriage, we have few holiday decorations thus far, and few holiday traditions as well. So we thought this year would be a good time to initiate some traditions–some involving decorations–what with us finally living in a space that could house more than the bare necessities. We took on Allsorts’ Advent calendar as our first holiday project–and I must say it turned out marvelously! (We took a bit of creative license with it, of course. :)

It was so fun for me to watch my grease-monkey hubby painstakingly embroider small felt pouches–I learned that he knows a bit more about sewing than I gave him credit for! Crafting is usually solely “my” territory in our house, so it was a treat for us to do something creative like this together. I think the endeavor even inspired hubby to learn more about sewing and felting–and he’s already moved on to making Miyazaki-inspired plushies!

Chocolates!! YUM.
I’m really excited about the holidays this year–beginning new traditions, getting a real Christmas tree (post & pics coming soon), buying handmade, seeing faraway family…December is already off to a great start!

Cheer to all….
