Vintage Ave and decompressing update.

April 23, 2008 · 5 Comments

Ave, circa 1985

Thought my readers (all three of you) might get a kick out of this blast from the past. Dig how I’m wearing a jumper with nothing under it?! That’s right, half of my torso was exposed. What can I say–I was a saucy kid. My hair is not this blond anymore.

I’m happy to report that I’m making progress on my resolutions for easing the overwhelmedness. Successes: declined an offer to participate in (yet another) local craft market this coming Saturday, and I could not be more excited about having a real weekend (fingers crossed that I get some jewelry supplies in the mail by then). Lunch breaks taken this week: two (one at the library). And today I’m teaching a coworker how to crochet on our lunch break. I’ve also spent at least a few minutes reading every day this week. All small steps, but they’re making a difference. Oh, and I’m getting an actual haircut at an actual salon next week! (I got a coupon.) I haven’t had my hair cut by anyone other than myself in about 6 years, but I’ve been in quite a hair funk lately, so it seems like a good time to call in reinforcements. Stay tuned to this space next Thursday for pictures of either my new fabulous ‘do or my new fabulous paper bag. Anything could happen.

Reason no. 7,389,451 why my husband is awesome.

April 18, 2008 · 5 Comments

He found that hat on the side of the road.

After texting him yesterday afternoon that I was having a bummer of a day, I came home to a hot bath being run (complete with lavender bath salts from JillianSays–mmmm), a cold beer in a frosted mug, and a quesadilla dinner on the stove. Oh, and snuggles.

Be jealous. Be very, very jealous.

Mini Reading Roundup and other stuff.

April 17, 2008 · 4 Comments

Out of focus.

(Reading Roundup is a semi-regular feature in which I share tasty bits of writing I’ve found.)

From My Pocket: Never tell your winter coat farewell, or April will play tricks on you. This one rings especially true to me this week, considering that Saturday we had 80-degree temps and since then it’s been 40-degree nights and 60-ish daytimes with a side of “very windy.” Not that I’m complaining, mind you.

Poet David Wojahn: We too often commit the hubris of thinking our desires can be gratified, or that gratifying them is going to give us the consolation we feel we need. These longings may prompt us to creative activity, and I guess the displacement of those longings is much of what poetry is about.

That’s all I’ve got today, kids. Whew. I don’t mind telling you that it’s been a hectic couple of weeks in Avenueland (more…)

I thought you were my boyfriend.

April 16, 2008 · No Comments

In the last few hours I’ve become fully re-infatuated with The Magnetic Fields, especially the album i. Not only does the sound of Stephin Merritt’s voice take me back to my life circa 2004, which is great, but when you think about it, anyone who can use the word “ampersand” and the line “So you quote love unquote me”–in the same song–totally deserves my undying affection.

In other news: trying not to over-analyze the fact that I just clipped a coupon…for a liquor store.

Clean plate club.

April 14, 2008 · 2 Comments

I think I’ve finally figured out how much I need to eat in a workday. Today I ate everything I brought in my lil’ lunch sack. You might not think that’s anything worth blogging about, but that’s cause you don’t know my history with this. I’m notorious (among the tiny circle that is me and my husband) for either waaay under-packing (to the point that I’m starving 20 minutes after eating and have to go buy a snack, thus negating the entire point of brown-bagging it), or significantly over-packing, then forgetting my lunch bag in the fridge (cause it still has perishables in it, duh) when I leave for home in a fog of glee. Then the next day I’m forced to use an evil plastic bag to tote my lunch stuffs to the office, thus negating the purpose of my cute lil’ nylon box/bag. (OK, so it’s not actually cute. It’s grey and rectangular and entirely unremarkable. I bought it for my husband but he never uses it cause he rides a motorcycle–and who needs extra things to carry when they’re on a motorcycle?) But today I struck the perfect balance, and I couldn’t be happier. Well, maybe I could have–until about 30 minutes ago when I found out that my father-in-law is making us dinner tonight. But now I’ve reached the pinnacle of food happiness. Happy Monday!

P.S. I’m sorry I don’t seem to blog about crafty or arty things much–read:ever–lately. But stay tuned, even if you find my lunch life boring! Soon to come: my solution to the promo dilemma, photos of vintage deliciousness, and probably something else mundane about my life.

It’s the simple things.

April 11, 2008 · 4 Comments

Like homemade granola for breakfast. Triscuits, sharp cheddar and fresh pineapple for lunch. A three-day weekend. Music that sounds like everything you love about the South. Bourbon slushies and late-night giggles. A friend’s small good fortune. A gulp of cold water. The bouganvillea in my front yard. For one day, ignoring all the minutia you should be worrying about and enjoying the company of people you love who live far away.

Me \'n my sister-in-law.

Just a few simple things that have made me smile today. Happy weekend! How was your day?

Decisions, decisions.

April 7, 2008 · 3 Comments

You know what’s frustrating? When you’ve finally made a hefty decision–we’re talking a life-changer here– with all consequences deliberated carefully and all options weighed thoughtfully, and are ready to move on with the next steps of said decision…when suddenly a new option is introduced, calling into question all your careful deliberation and plotting-out. It’s torture. And you have one of those throw-it-all-out-the-window moments and want to avoid being a responsible adult entirely. (Pardon the vagueness, but this is how it’s gotta be.) That’s my day in a nutshell. Happy Monday.

In other, entirely less troubling news, I love my husband. And I love when he has weekends off, because we do so many fabulous and ridiculous things when we have days to spend together–like surprise my mom with a visit the day after her birthday, buy lots of stuff we don’t really need–but might someday!–at a salvage mart, eat all kinds of ice cream, shred T-shirts for stuffing pillows, dramatically de-clutter our carport, start trying to buy a house, bake sweet potato fries, lie around listening to the rain, and just generally be awesome and adorable. I love him and I love our life together and I wish every couple in the world could be as happy as we are.

March 26, 2008 · 3 Comments

Ollie Octopus, originally uploaded by Avenue [Handmade].

He’s patiently waiting to be adopted by a good home–in my Etsy shop! (Along with a few other new cards….)

In other news, we’re going to see Brian Regan tomorrow! Comped tickets: a perk of working in the news media. W00t.

New vista on the horizon.

March 25, 2008 · 3 Comments

looking-out.jpg

I have to warn you that what follows will be intentionally vague (in the spirit of not counting chickens before they’re hatched and whatnot), but the sentiment behind it is most certainly specific, articulate and deeply-felt (albeit tinged with specks of bittersweet). With that said: It looks like at least one dream of mine that has been deferred for almost two years, thought impossible for all sorts of reasons, and nearly given up on will finally come to fruition, in a matter of months. I literally feel bubbly with the prospect, but I want to let this gestate and come to fullness on its own, without projections and expectations that may never come to be. Rest assured, more details will be forthcoming in this space, and I’ll be chronicling it all as it plays out.

Inherited Notions

March 20, 2008 · No Comments

Notions, originally uploaded by Avenue [Handmade].

OK, I know, I promised illustrated tales of my latest craft fair adventure…soon, my dears, soon. It’s hard to blog lots of photos when you spend 40 hours a week away from the computer that holds said photos and your work computer doesn’t read your jump drive. I know, I know, it’s a hard life I lead. No really, I promise a posting of those photos this weekend…and maybe even a website launch….

Anyway, just wanted to share this bit of eye candy in the form of some vintage sewing notions I recently inherited from my paternal grandmother. (more…)
