Inherited Notions

Notions, originally uploaded by Avenue [Handmade].

OK, I know, I promised illustrated tales of my latest craft fair adventure…soon, my dears, soon. It’s hard to blog lots of photos when you spend 40 hours a week away from the computer that holds said photos and your work computer doesn’t read your jump drive. I know, I know, it’s a hard life I lead. No really, I promise a posting of those photos this weekend…and maybe even a website launch….

Anyway, just wanted to share this bit of eye candy in the form of some vintage sewing notions I recently inherited from my paternal grandmother. She died almost 2 years ago, but since her husband (my step-grandpa) continued living in the house, we never really went through her stuff. But now he’s remarried (and I haven’t seen him once since her death…kinda odd) and my dad and aunts are finally sorting through Granna’s belongings and preparing to sell the house. Boy, was she ever a pack-rat! Something about the generation that grew up during the Depression….

My sister is keeping the actual sewing box and most of its contents (’cause I got our maternal grandma’s sewing box), I just picked out these bits of ric rac, lace, and a few buttons. I also am now the proud owner of several quilts sewn by my great-grandma, one of which is unfinished and which it is my goal to complete by the end of this year (we’ll see how that goes: me=quilting virgin…I’m sure I’ll be sharing my [laughable] progress here). I came home with other spoils as well, but I’ll save those stories for another time when I can post pictures of them. For now I’ll just say that going through her cedar chest of vintage quilts, dresses, crinolines, shawls and baby things was an ecstatic experience. If there are two things I’m a sucker for they’re vintage fabrics and sentimental heirlooms. Sigh.

Happy Vernal Equinox, dear (Northern Hemisphere) readers! I hope it’s spring-ish where you are, ’cause it’s downright dreary in the Sunshine State. See you this weekend…I’ll be the one with the dino photos!
